My name is Makara*, and I’m an 8 year old survivor.
I am 8 years old and entered the SHE Rescue Home after being rescued from traffickers. I used to beg for money in the streets, was often left alone, and lived in an abusive environment. I am just starting school in the first grade, love to jump on trampolines in the SHE Home and my favourite foods are chicken and bitter melon soup, and when I grow up I dream of becoming a doctor!
My mother left me and my sisters with no explanation and no contact information for how to reach her. My father often used me and my sister to beg in the streets for money before he also abandoned the family and took my younger sister with him. I haven’t seen her since and I miss her. My grandmother, aunt and her family lived near me and are the safer and more supportive family members.
My social workers and counsellors will work to provide me with necessary support as I adjust to life in the SHE Rescue Home. I will start my education and have been able to enrol in a private school, and my social workers will assess the safety and reintegration capability within my extended family and community. My counsellors will also work with me and provide trauma counselling for the abuse I’ve survived. Most importantly, I will be safe where I can play, learn, and be a child!
