My name is Boupho*, and I’m a 4 year old survivor.
Boupho’s* Reintegration Story
In 2017, Boupho* came into our care after being sexually exploited in her community out in the province, she was just 3 years old at the time. The local police were not willing to investigate her case, but after her mother refused to drop the case and her social worker kept calling and insisting they investigate, the perpetrator was finally arrested and the process to set a court case date has begun.
On September 14th, 2017, all of the girls gathered to celebrate Boupho* and the exciting news that she would be going home. Laughter filled the home as the girls played musical statues, hunted for lollies, and competed in a cake decorating and eating contests! But Boupho’s* favourite part was opening her reintegration presents! She was given clothes, school supplies, toys, a watch, a bicycle and some items for personal hygiene.
Now a bubbly, happy child it is hard to believe she was ever the grumpy, angry child who refused to share like when she first arrived. Boupho* is very clever, often outwitting the housemothers to get extra snacks. She loves going to school and spending time after school learning khmer and English with our teachers. Her counsellor has worked with her to reinforce positive behaviours and now she no longer hits others and seldom throws fits when she does not get her way. Boupho* also loves cameras and taking photographs as well as selfies.
Over the course of her eight months at the SHE Rescue Home, her social worker worked closely with Boupho’s* family, helping her mother and grandmother to start a successful business selling Khmer noodles and cakes which has been going very well! Additionally, a team arrived in July 2017 to build a house for Boupho* and her family! Now that her mother has a stable income and safe home for Boupho* and her siblings to grow up in, we felt it was the right time for her to return home. Boupho* was very excited to be back with her mother, whom she had missed very much.
