The Most Powerful Tool
Lack of education is a common vulnerability that lends to the injustice of human trafficking. Access to education is a fundamental right that should be afforded to every child, yet is often overlooked. Many of the girls in our care, and all those who have come through our home, face considerable hurdles in gaining access to education. In some cases, schools are located a considerable distance away from their homes and their families do not have a safe way to provide transportation. Sometimes children are needed in the home to help take care of their siblings, or to help provide for the family so they have enough to eat. In other cases, schools within their community stop offering classes beyond primary school, which can be an all too common occurrence.
Three years ago a young girl named Srey Roth* joined our care, she was 13 years old and in grade 1, due to never being able to attend school regularly. As she arrived into our care she expressed a deep desire to learn and continue working on her studies; she shared of how important it was to her sense of self and feelings of accomplishment. She gave herself to her schooling completely and showed great commitment and dedication to every task before her. Today Srey Roth* is 16 years old and entering grade 6! She dreams of one day attending a university to become a social worker, and we’re proud to say she is right on track and gaining the skillsets necessary in order to move beyond her circumstance into a future of opportunity and hope, and we’re so proud of her!
Through the years we’ve come to deeply understand education as one of the greatest tools we can provide to the girls of our home. Education opens pathways and opportunities for a generation rising up that would have otherwise remained out of reach. Together we’re writing a new story – a story of equipping the heart of one girl to believe in herself and her ability to accomplish her dreams, and a story of equipping a generation to understand the very power that exists within their commitment, diligence, perseverance, and hope for something greater.
